Chilarai College came into existence on January 26, 1973. From the very beginning the department of Bengali has been playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of a vast majority of young aspiration in this socio-economically backward Indo-Bangladesh border area. The Department is a quite experienced and matured department since inception of the college. It has a Departmental Library having sufficient text books and reference books to support teaching – learning process. There are provisions of remedial classes for slow learners and additional classes especially for honours students. It has a strong and compact faculty to quench the thirst of knowledge of the students.

The students and the teachers of the department take part in extension activities and community engagement. Through seminars, workshops, and cultural events, the department seeks to immerse students in the vibrant tapestry of Bengali culture and literature, instilling in them a sense of pride and appreciation for their cultural identity. Through a dynamic curriculum and dedicated faculty, the department strives to cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and a passion for lifelong learning among the students. The outreach programs, collaborative initiatives, and extension activities, the department aims to promote literacy, linguistic proficiency, and cultural awareness among the broader community. Further, the department organizes seminars, special lectures, talks, etc. on literary as well as socially relevant issues. The Department arranges regular student seminars, invited lecturers by distinguished teachers in an attempt to train them for upcoming studies and researches. The students also take part in regular personality development programs and they are also encouraged to participate in regular activities relevant to their studies in campus and outside of the college as well.
