DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI

Chilarai College came into existence on January 26, 1973. From the very beginning the department of Bengali has been playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of a vast majority of young aspiration in this socio-economically backward Indo-Bangladesh border area. The Department is a quite experienced and matured department since inception of the college. It has a Departmental Library having sufficient text books and reference books to support teaching – learning process. There are provisions of remedial classes for slow learners and additional classes especially for honours students. It has a strong and compact faculty to quench the thirst of knowledge of the students.

VISION & MISION:

  1. To promote a value based education through the literary experience of Bengali humanisitic literature.
  2. To contribute to the transformation of society through the ideals set by great Bengali writers and thinkers like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar,Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam,Sukanta Bhattacharya,Buddhadeva Bose among others, by being being socially conscious and responsible.
  3. To promote inter-cultural and inter-religious harmony through literature and literary activities.

Future Plan:

  1. We plan to arrange a couple of awareness camp or seminars for the benefit of society and create interest in perusing Bengali.
  2. We have a plan to develop our departmental library with our sincere effort in collaboration with college authority.
  3. As a part of continuous evaluation we plan to arrange seminars, workshops, group discussions, project work, field study etc.
  4. The department has been instrumental in motivating young students to develop future carrier in education by proceeding for further studies.
  5. We have a plan to introduce more skill based course in the coming years..
  6. We have a plan to involve the advance learner of the department in extensive research related activities.

PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOME (BA Bengali):

Specific outcome of studying the syllabus prescribed for the students of Bengali major classes may be cited below:

  • The literature of medieval period incorporated in the syllabus gives an opportunity to the learners to know the glorious chapter of History, religion & socio- cultural conditions etc. of the people of the Country especially of
  • The Golden age of Bengali literature (Reminiscence /Biography / children literature of 19th- 20th century), based on the values that guide the students to discriminate between right and It is very important for the students to understand the basic principles of morality so that the students may play a responsible role in any kind of undesirable situations of the society. Degree MIL (General Compulsory)

This paper will introduce the students to prose, poetry and novels in Bengali Literature. It has an oriented curriculum which includes journalistic, reporting, interview, advertisement writing, editing, proof reading and translating. The idea is to provide the students with the required hand-

on training.

Paper I-Degree elective/Hons This paper introduces the students to the

history of Bengali Literature.

 

Paper II-Degree elective/Hons

This paper introduced the students to Bengali rhetoric prosody and acquaints them with some of the major works of poetry

and drama.

 

Paper III-Degree elective/Hons

The paper deals with the history and nature of the Bengali Language. The paper exposed the students to the language, literature and culture of the Khasi and Garo communities

of Meghalaya.

Paper IV-Degree elective/Hons The paper deals with the stylistics of Bengali

Literature in the pre and postmodern poetry,

prose, essay, drama, novel and chronicles.
 

Paper V-Degree elective/Hons

This paper primarily focuses on study of some selected short stories and novels in Bengali. It acquaint the students with Assamese short story (Translated into

Bengali).

Paper VI-Degree elective/Hons This paper will introduce the students to

selected prose and poetry in Bengali.

 

Paper VII- Degree elective/Hons

This paper attempts to familiarize the students with the history of Bengali theatre. It also seeks to introduce them to the extant types of plays. It envisages a study of some

well-known Bengali plays.

This paper involves a study of history of literature in Sanskrit, English and Assamese (Literature of a neighbouring state).This paper seeks to give the students a grounding

in aesthetics.

ACTIVITIES

The students and the teachers of the department take part in extension activities and community engagement. Through seminars, workshops, and cultural events, the department seeks to immerse students in the vibrant tapestry of Bengali culture and literature, instilling in them a sense of pride and appreciation for their cultural identity. Through a dynamic curriculum and dedicated faculty, the department strives to cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and a passion for lifelong learning among the students. The outreach programs, collaborative initiatives, and extension activities, the department aims to promote literacy, linguistic proficiency, and cultural awareness among the broader community. Further, the department organizes seminars, special lectures, talks, etc. on literary as well as socially relevant issues. The Department arranges regular student seminars, invited lecturers by distinguished teachers in an attempt to train them for upcoming studies and researches. The students also take part in regular personality development programs and they are also encouraged to participate in regular activities relevant to their studies in campus and outside of the college as well.
