College History

    Chilarai College was established in the year 1973. The college was brought under the deficit grant-in-aid system in the year 1987 and University Grants Commission (UGC) listed the college under UGC Act of 2(f) and 12(B) in the year 2001.

    Demography

    The area is mainly dominated by 
    OBC & MOBC belonging to primarily Koch & Rajbangshi community.

    Chilarai College is the first college in the district of Dhubri to have been awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, on October 4 and 5, 2004. The college has been awarded Grade 'B' by the NAAC with 73% of aggregate, so far the highest among all the colleges in the district.

    Location

    The College is located in the district of Dhubri, the Western part of Assam. The College is 4 kms away from Indo- Bangladesh Border, 1/2 kms  from NH 31 and approximately 22 kms  from Dhubri, Dist. HQ.

    26th January'73, was the first day of the college inside the Jogomohan Vidyapith Campus. Soon the college was shifted to Shibendra Nath Adhikary's double storied building. Mr. Naushad Zaman was the founder principal. Among the staff were Bhuban Chandra Prodhani, Shibendra Nath Adhikary, Chani Ram Ray, Giridhar Ray, Tarani Ray.

    On 17th February'75, the University had given the deadline that the college must buy fixed deposit of worth Rs. 35,000 the next day to get University affiliation. Late Kabir Chandra Ray Prodhani, the President of the college and also the the then MLA , instructed the people at Golokganj to collect the money and get the NSC. Only Rs. 33,000 was collected and there was no way to collect the deficit amount of Rs. 2,000. At last eighteen (18) watches were mortgaged for getting the money. Thereafter only the NSC was bought and finally deposited for affiliation.

    Mr. C Babu Rajiv (IAS), the then District Commissioner of Dhubri, had agreed to let the Gaon Panchayats under Golokganj block divert their funds to raise an amount of Rs.1,00,000 for the college. The college had the worst of its time as even after ten years of its establishment. Till 1982-83, the college was running provisionally in the borrowed accommodation of Chilarai Bhavan at the BTC. The College inspector Mr. K. C. Medhi, Principal, University Law College, was on verge of writing off the college. Then people like Jugal Khetawat, Mrs. Sabita Prodhani, Manoranjan Dev, and other distinguished people had to give Mr. Medhi the undertaking to build its own building, library and other basic infrastructures. Afterwards people were desperately looking for money. Sabita Prodhani played a significant role in convincing the Panchayat President to let go an amount Rs.20,000 each from the funds earmarked for their respective Panchayats. Thus Rs.1,00,000 was arranged to build the college building. Also Dimbeshwar Hazarika, the then Sub Deputy Collector (SDC) of Golokganj played a significant role in providing land to the college. Jibesh Babu, Rajat Babu, Swabala Ray, Aperva Sarma, Dimbeshwar Hazarika and others played a significant role in collection of funds for the college building. They got free bricks from Gauripur, Assam State Electricity Board provided Rs. 5,000. Mr. Kabir Chandra Ray Prodhani had granted an amount of Rs. 20,000 from the OBC fund. Mr. Hiteshwar Saikia, the then Chief Minister offered Rs. 25,000 to the college. An another amount of Rs.25,000 was offered by Mr. Mukut Sarma, the then Minister of Assam Cabinet in 1984. Late in 1986 Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had granted an amount of Rs.20,000 from State Lottery Fund.

    The present building structure of the College has utilised 5 Bighas of land having a park in front of the College.

    Additional 15 Bighas of land has been acquired for further development purpose.
