From Principal’s Desk:

It gives me immense pleasure to mention few things about Chilarai College. At the outset I sincerely offer my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the members as well as those noble personalities who had the vision, dream and the commitment to set up an institution for higher education in an extremely backward locality of Western Assam. The college was established in the year 1973 and named after the 16th Century’s greatest warrior scholar Biswa Mahabir Chilarai of Koch Kingdom. Chilarai College has been a potential force of social engineering, of empowering the economically backward communities like OBC’s and MOBC’s and of spreading the light of the learning among the deprived lot in the remote region of western part of Assam.

Initially the college had 9(nine) Departments and was initially a college of Arts Stream. The college came under grant-in-aid system in 1987 (provincialised in 2005). In 2008 the celebrated its Silver Jubilee with a National Level Seminar inviting faculties from several Universities of North East and West Bengal. The college was enlisted under the UGC Act of 2(f) and 12(b) in the year of 2000 and since then the college has been receiving financial assistance from UGC on regular basis for several development works of the college. In the year 2004 Chilarai College has been assessed and accredited by NAAC Bangalore with “B” Grade and our institution bagged highest aggregate points in the district of Dhubri, Assam and it was reaccredited by NAAC (Second Cycle) on 28 to 30 September 2015 and was awarded Grade B. The college has introduced BBA under Gauhati University and has opened two new subjects for the students’ viz-Sanskrit, Tourism & Travel Management. With limited infrastructure facility the college is offering basic Computer Education to the aspiring students of the college. The college is offering Major Courses for all the subjects. Each department has got an average of two full time teachers. Thanks to the management body and local participants, the college is employing 2-3 part time teachers every year to run the courses. The academic atmosphere of the college is extremely healthy. Some of the teachers are engaged in research works on a regular basis either for doctoral works or for post doctoral works. The student-teacher relationship is extremely good. Students’ participation in teaching-learning process is highly encouraging. The college brings out an annual magazine called “CHILARIAN”, which is a major annual creative event of the college. The college has central library named after the founder president Late Bhuban Chandra Prodhani which is partially computerized at present.

The college has completed four decades and has a number of new projects in its pipelines. We have the plan of introducing Science and Commerce Stream, several job-oriented vocational courses and modernizing the entire set up. I am sure, we shall be successful. It demands a lot of commitments, hard work and sincerity. We shall not rest; we shall keep on thriving and striving in order to transform this institution of higher education to a potential centre of excellence and learning.

  1. Chilarai College was reaccredited by NAAC in 2015 and awarded “B” Grade.
  2. An annual journal with ISSN number called “Darshan-Darpan” from Department of Philosophy, 2014.
  3. From 2013 introduced Management Stream with 11 (Eleven) Departments.
  4. In the post NAAC reassessment year 2016, the college arranged one National Seminar with Sahitya Akademy of India and one Drama Workshop with Sangeet Natak Akademy of India. The college ranked 9th position in the BBA Final Examination 2016 under Gauhati University.
