The Department of Assamese is one of the oldest department of Chilarai College. The department was established in the year 1973. The department along with the support of college administration has been able to create an effective environment for the development of language, literature and culture of the locality and overall the state trough higher education In the initial stage the department introduced MIL and Elective Assamese course In 1992 the department introduced Honors Course in Assamese
Before the deficit of the college some enlightened teachers like TaraniKanta Roy, Pulama Das, SwapnalıSaikia, DwipendraKumarAdhikary have offered their invaluable service in non-sanctioned post. In 1987 the college obtained the status of Deficit College That time Dr DwijendraNathBhakat and Pranab Kumar Sarma were working as lecturers. In the year 1993 Mr.Nitai Chandra Roy joined in the department as lecturer and subsequently Dr Umesh Das and Mr.Alakesh Ch. Roy have joined as Assistant Professors in the year 2016
To promote ethnic language, literature and culture of this region "Centre for Ethnic Studies and Research" (CESR) was formed at Chilarai College in 1998 with the active co-operation of the Assamese Department. Many books and magazine have been published through the centre and the centre has also conducted many national and state level seminars and workshops. Senior teachers of the department, especially Dr.DwijendraNathBhakat, Pranab Kumar Sarma and NitaiChandara Roy have completed UGC sponsored Minor Research Project.
Senior teacher of the department (now Retired) Dr DwijendraNathBhakat has received Research Guide ship from MIL&LS Department of Gauhati University and ten Research Scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his supervision till date.The Faculty members are associated with the various committees for the development of the college. The department is always trying to keep good relationship with socio-cultural organizations for the greater interest of the community.
Besides that the department has also a literary forum called AsamiyaSahityaChara, and a wall magazine namely Janamanas which is prepared by the students and faculties of the department annually
The department has a library of its own which has 1100 books and periodicals. The college has decided to introduce a certificate courses under the Assamese Department namely "Certificate Course in Rajbanshi Language".
